What's Happening in Your Backyard

Portland’s Raptor Cam on Monday, March 02, 2009

Although it is early for most birds to nest in the Portland area, some birds are preparing their nests and incubating their eggs already. One of our local birds that nest early is the Red-tailed Hawk. Do you want a bird’s eye view of the nesting process?

Visit the KGW/ Audubon Raptor cam to get a bird’s eye view of nesting Red-tailed Hawks!  Last year the eggs were laid by March 8 and hatched on April 16. A live camera is placed about 15 feet from the nest, allowing us to watch the nest building, egg laying, hatching of chicks, feeding of chicks and finally the fledging. One of the amazing things about this nest cam is that it is situated hundreds of feet above the ground on a building in downtown Portland. Since the installation of the nest cam in 2007 Portlanders have been able to see this majestic creature up close. Be sure to tune in and see all the action!  Click on this link to visit.
