The recent spell of sunny weather provided motivation for my much-needed garden chores. Between weeding and planting I was able to catch a glimpse of a couple of Golden Crowned Sparrows that will soon be on their way to nesting territory.

The newly arrived Rufous Hummingbird is trying to assert his dominance over the resident Anna’s as he does each year at this time. Bushtits are still feeding as a flock, but soon will disperse and begin their nesting activity. And thank goodness for Pine Siskins and Lesser Goldfinches! They are busy feeding on the first of 38,350 poundsof nyjer we received last week. We hope that many goldfinches and siskins around Portland will be pleased by our purchase.
Repeats of rising nyjer prices prompted our unusual purchase. It will enable us to keep our prices lower with the added benefit of the freshest nyjer available: this crop was harvested in January and packed in February.
Backyard Bird Shop gives over $40,000 annually to local non-profits like Audubon Society of Portland, Friends of Trees, Friends of Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, Tualatin RiverKeepers, Prescott Bluebird Recovery Project, Oregon Public Broadcasting, and others through direct donations and company sponsored fundraisers. Our staff members spend many hours volunteering as well. In April and May our newsletter and our shops will offer you the opportunity to support Birdathon, Audubon’s most important fundraiser and have your donation matched by Backyard Bird Shop (up to $1000).
Enjoy your backyard birds!
