How do I keep a cat from interfering with my bird feeder?

Is a cat lurking near your bird feeder?

Is a cat lurking near your feeder? There are a few things you can do.  First, make sure that your bird feeder is out in the open, away from likely cat hiding places.  Wild birds use their eyesight for protection, so they need to be able to see all around the feeding area to watch for predators.  Then, here are a few alternatives to consider:

1.  To stop even a fast-moving cat who might spring from a distance, consider using a short section of wire fence to encircle the bird feeding area.  A low fence spiraling outward from the feeding area forces a cat to show itself, and slow down, as it winds through the “fence maze”, allowing birds a chance to take flight.

2.  If you don’t want wire fencing surrounding your bird feeder, The Scarecrow motion-activated sprinkler will release a short burst of water when a cat, or even a raccoon or a deer, gets too close.

3.  The Cat Stop emits a loud shriek that really startles a cat, but people can’t hear.

Look around your yard and consider what might work for you.  All three of these cat-discouragers will likely help you keep “Fluffy” from hanging around the feeder!
