Just Say “No” to Growing Sunflower Plants

Here are 4 tips to help you keep from growing a crop under your feeder:

Want to stop your black oil sunflower seed from growing a crop under your feeder?  Three tips could change your life:

1.  Only put out as much seed as will be consumed in 3 days maximum, to reduce spillage, squirrel and raccoon theft, etc.
2.  Add a seed-catching tray to your feeder to catch seeds that the birds drop.
2.  Offer Sunflower Chips, which are the meats of the seed, with the hulls removed.  Without hulls, the seeds cannot germinate.
3.  Microwave in-the-shell sunflower seeds for 2 minutes per pound on high power, up to 5 pounds at a time.
