September – Columbia Riverkeeper

Columbia Riverkeeper is dedicated to protecting and restoring the water quality of the Columbia River and all life connected to it. Our team includes community organizers, environmental lawyers, and scientists.

All along the Columbia, we work with people in dozens of communities—rural and urban—with the same goals: protecting the health of their families and the places they love. We organize and empower local communities, enforce environmental laws, and build strategic coalitions to stop illegal pollution, protect salmon habitat, fight harmful fossil fuel terminals, and clean up Hanford.

Our proven combination of legal advocacy and community organizing have led to huge victories. In the last four years we:

  • Defeated over a dozen new fossil fuel infrastructure projects, including the nation’s largest coal, oil, and fracked gas terminals;
  • Restored a brown-field site to create a living laboratory for students of all ages;
  • Won in court to require the Environmental Protection Agency to issue a new plan to protect salmon from hot water; and
  • Worked in solidarity with tribal nations to: support a new vision for Hanford nuclear waste cleanup; petition for a new Superfund site, Bradford Island, on the Columbia River near the Bonneville dam; and challenge in court Trump’s rollback of toxic pollution limits.

Legal work makes a difference. But lawsuits alone do not create the change we need. Change comes when people organize and stand together for something they believe in. We work to educate and inspire people to learn about, monitor, and care for the Columbia. Power shifts when conversations around kitchen tables grow into successful campaigns.
